Checking the result
Checking is part of the workflow. Confirm numbers, dates, names, quotations and links in the original source.
Asking “cite your source” is not enough: the source itself may be invented. Open the link yourself and see that what was claimed is really there.
Compare an important claim with a second independent source. If the topic is your own field, your own knowledge is the best filter.
Remember
- Confirm facts in the original source.
- Open the link yourself.
- Compare with a second source.
Exercise
You want to use a statistic given by a model in an article. What is the most correct step?
Answer and explanation
- Find the original source of the number and confirm it by reading it yourself. (correct answer)Only the original source is proof.
- Ask the model itself “is this true?” and treat a “yes” as enough.A model can confirm its own mistake just as confidently.
- Round the number and use it.Rounding is not a substitute for checking.
Practical task
Find one fact or number a model gave you in its original source.
- I picked a fact
- I found the original source
- I noted whether they match
