Prompt structure: role, task, context, format
Four parts are enough in most cases: the role (who the model answers as), the task (what to do), the context (the situation, who it is for) and the format (list, table, length).
Example: “You are a teaching assistant (role). Make a lesson plan on the water cycle for grade 7 (task). The lesson is 45 minutes and there are 25 students (context). Give it as a table (format).”
Not every part is needed every time, but if the result is vague, check which part is missing.
Remember
- Role + task + context + format.
- If you do not like the result, add the missing part.
Exercise
A prompt says “Give the result as a 5-row table”. Which part of the prompt is this?
Answer and explanation
- RoleThe role is who the answerer is (for example, “as a teacher”).
- ContextContext is information about the situation and the audience.
- Format (correct answer)The form the answer should take is the format part.
Practical task
Write one four-part prompt on a topic of your own.
- I wrote the four parts separately
- I sent it to the model and looked at the result
