Working step by step and refining
Break a complex task into parts: first a plan, then each section, and an edit at the end. Demanding everything in one request often lowers quality.
Let the model ask questions: “Before you start, ask me 3 clarifying questions.” This finds the unclear spots in advance.
When you correct, change one thing at a time (“shorten it”, “make the tone formal”): that way you can see which change made the difference.
Remember
- Break it into parts.
- Ask the model for clarifying questions.
- Make corrections one at a time.
Exercise
You need to prepare a large report. Which approach is more advisable?
Answer and explanation
- Demand everything in a single request.Quality and accuracy may drop, and it is hard to correct.
- First a plan, then the sections one by one, and an edit at the end. (correct answer)Working step by step lets you control each stage.
- Use the first answer without changes. The first answer is usually a draft.
Practical task
Split one job into three steps (plan, draft, edit) and give them to the model one after another.
- I got a plan
- I got a draft
- I had it edited
